Becky Nurse of Salem

When: Dec. 12-Jan. 26 2020
Price: $30-$97
A whirlpool of sorcery wider than Charybdis is spreading in Berkeley. Or so it seems with a number of theater companies with holiday-time productions featuring ghosts, spirits, wizards, and, especially, witches. Not the least of the fine shows at the end of the year is playwright Sarah Ruhl’s sixth foray at The Rep; a dark comedy swirling with spells and suspense. Becky is descendant of Rebecca Nurse — infamously executed for witchcraft in 1692 — and a woman caught in the snare of Post-Obama “lock her up” witch hunts. Losing her teaching job after daring to call out The Crucible in front of the tender young ears of children, sorcery sinks Becky underwater in unexpected ways. The world premiere work runs 2.5-hours and introduces a number of intriguing actors making their debut appearances on the company’s Peet’s Theatre stage.
