Beats and Brush Strokes: Streams of Cultural Consciousness

When: Fri., Dec. 14, 7 p.m. 2007
Price: free

Operating on a shoestring budget of grant money and volunteer zeal, Seventh Native American Generation (SNAG) Magazine managed to produce four issues since its inception in 2002. Each featured poetry and personal essays from Native American junior high and high school students throughout the US. Now, SNAG is working to put out its fifth issue entirely on community donations because, said co-editor ShadiRahimi "it seems like native stuff just isn't hot in the grant world any more." She and co-editor RasK'Dee will hold court at this Friday's fund-raiser, called Beats and Brush Strokes: Streams of Cultural Consciousness. The all-ages event features performances by Fuga, Goodshield, El Vuh, the Genie, CihautlCe, Quese IMC, Sunni Daze, Lil-O, All Nations Drummers, Dynamic Duo, DJs Zita and Smokestack, emcees from BUMP Records, and RasK'Dee's world fusion group One Struggle. There will also be a market with works by indigenous artisans, a silent art auction, and live painting. On Dec. 14 at the InterTribal Friendship House (523 International Blvd., Oakland). 7 p.m., free.
