Beat Boxing Concert

When: Thu., Sept. 25, 8 p.m., Thu., Nov. 13, 8:30 p.m. and Thu., Dec. 18, 8:30 p.m. 2008
Price: $10, students $8

Any competent beatboxer can mimic a rattle-and-clap club beat, but a truly creative beatboxer will take it a step farther, alternating the snare and ride with unfamiliar sounds that create tone, mood, and atmosphere -- even tell a story. Perhaps the best example is Carlos "Infinite" Aguirre, whose adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart features a beatboxed "heartbeat" processed through a loop station to create an eerie, propulsive soundscape. Infinite fronts the band Felonious, but these days he's more apt to appear in side projects with Felonious drummer (and beatboxer) Soulati. The duo will perform at the "Speak the Music" showcase, which will explore how beatboxing has evolved from percussion to bona fide performance art, with Butterscotch, Maximillion, Eachbox, Syzygy, Monkstilo, Icebox, Tim Barsky, Constant Change, Cornbread, D.C., the Genie, and host Josh Walters. On September 25 at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $10.
