Beastmaster

When: Oct. 30-Nov. 28 2010

Forget the silly 1980s fantasy movie in which, according to one blogger, ÒMan in leather underwear controls the animals.Ó Jaime LakatosÕ bizarre animal sculptures and drawings are unsettling rather than heroic, consonant with our conflicted feelings about biogenetics. Are There Some Things Man Was Not Meant to Know? Decide for yourself after checking out these comic, grotesque ÒfrankensteinedÓ critters combining taxidermy fiberglass shells (it appears) and glass eyes with overlays of fabric scales. ÒLook Both Ways Before FissionÓ is a double-headed pushmi-pullyu hyena sprouting green leaves from its back. (Bicephaly, incidentally, pops up in several pieces.) The trophy head in ÒDeerly Departed,Ó with its wet-fur scales, suggests beaver or platypus as much as deer. Best of Show: the canine/leonine walrus head in ÒBaron,Ó as goofy and endearing as the ILM-designed Òdouble-dildosaurusÓ in Willow. Beastmaster runs through November 28 at The Compound Gallery (1167 65th St., Oakland). Artist talk Sunday, Nov. 28, 4 p.m. 510-817-4042 or TheCompoundGallery.com
