Drama, Romance
Nauseatingly cute youth-market update of Beauty and the Beast functions as a teenage morality play. A vain, pompous rich kid (Alex Pettyfer) gets transformed by the school witch (Mary-Kate Olsen) into an ugly guy (overly theatrical makeup), and the only way to break the spell is for him to convince someone to say “I love you.” That’s where Vanessa Hudgens comes in, as the girl who imparts valuable life lessons. Another sad example of the Twilight effect, directed with no cliché neglected by Daniel Barnz, who adapted the screenplay from Alex Flinn’s novel. (95 min.)
