The group show Beacons, which is now on view at Faultline Art Space (815 High St., Oakland), highlights just how interconnected some of Oakland’s most talented artists are. Guest-curated by Faultline resident Mario Navasero, the exhibit features many of his peers and influencers, including Sydney Cain, John Casey, Deadeyes, Cannon Dill, Chris Granillo, Max Kauffman, Lauren Napolitano, Pancho Pescador, David Polka, Jared Roses, and Santos Shelton. Each artist is worthy of his or her own solo show, but together, their pieces form an exciting assemblage of distinct yet compatible styles. Navasero’s works include a number of tiny, painted sculptures of Oakland buildings made from spray-paint cans and other scrap metal. Furthering this aesthetic, Kauffman’s paintings are rendered on crushed spray-paint cans, many of which depict Oakland architecture. Much of the other work is done on wood cutouts, which is Faultline’s specialty craft. One of these, “Hungry Eyes,” is a collaboration between Dill and Napolitano featuring a curled-up fox in Dill’s signature style, with Napolitano’s dreamy, geometric designs embellishing its body. Beacons does, indeed, form a beam of creative vision that’s lighting the way in Oakland’s art scene.
