Though they'll forever be saddled with Ozomatli comparisons, EastBay funk band Bayonics still managed to cut its own cloth in the over-saturated world of Afro-Latin hip-hop. With two horns, a hefty rhythm section, and three bilingual emcees, this eleven-piece group oscillates from downtempo reggae to salsa with a heavy backbeat. Spawned when a bunch of mid-level salsa musicians realized their shared desire to "represent the Bay," Bayonics owes its existence partly to some really great jam band sessions, and partly to an indefatigable fusion scene. The band members posted some catchy, varied material on their MySpace page (including the barrio come-on "Aye Mami" and hooky funk tune "Time Over Money"), but it pales in comparison to Bayonics' live show. Bayonics perform with the Unsmokables this Saturday, Dec. 22 at Berkeley's Starry Plough Pub. 9:30 p.m., $9.
