Re: “Back to Square One

I own a loft in Jack London and I feel like the entire neighborhood has been victim to a gigantic hoax perpetrated by Ellis Partners. I moved there in 2004 amid promises that the city was committed to bringing new residents into the area, and that a new "harvest hall" including a daily market was already in the works. Since then, restaurants in the area continue to disappear, the marketing displays in the windows of the vacant retail shops gather dust, and year after year we hear some new scheme from Ellis Partners to make the whole thing work - but the only thing they ever build is office space. And even that stands mostly empty. Thanks to them, I'm losing money on the investment made in my loft hand over fist. And the city seems to have worsened the situation by reneging on their commitment to mixed use development in the area. It's a total and complete nightmare. This is the kind of thing that gives developers a bad name. To find out in this article that they leveraged political connections to steal the whole area at a below-market price just makes me sick. They had every advantage and they just turned the place into a crime-ridden ghosetown and took us all down with them.
