Basement Jaxx

When: Sat., July 12, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $20, $25
The English duo Basement Jaxx, one of the longest running and most commercially successful electronica units currently active, regularly topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the 2000s with club-ready house tracks and collaborations with pop stars. In 2009, Basement Jaxx released both the genre-hopping Scars, which dealt pummeling house alongside up-tempo funk, and Zephyr, which was downtempo for Basement Jaxx but wouldn’t fit into the style called “downtempo.” For its trend-friendly makeovers and use of famous vocalists, the duo is often accused of shameless populism, but the presence of a clear human voice has become its signature motif. At this point, listeners expect an array of singers to deliver saccharine hooks above the duo’s throbbing grooves and EDM sheen. Whether or not Junto, the duo’s long-awaited seventh album, is a return to form, Basement Jaxx’s upcoming DJ set at Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco) will be tailored to the dance floor.
