Cal Raijin Taiko's arsenal has grown significantly since its inception in 2005, assures drummer Tristan Mosely. Conceived in a fraternity basement, the group started out by drumming on spare tires covered with a couple layers of duct tape, which apparently make a real killin' sound -- members of Raijin Taiko still practice on tires so as not to ruin the eight taiko drums that they built themselves. On Wednesday, April 16, the ensemble will descend on Julia Morgan Center for the Arts (2640 College Ave., Berkeley) for "Base Beat," a show that combines hip, contemporary-sounding rhythms with choreographed dance moves. 7 p.m., $5-$7.
