Tue, May 6, 2008 at 8:21 AM

Commemorating the victory of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín's Mexican forces over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, Oakland's Cinco de Mayo festival - held in Fruitvale on May 4, a day before the anniversary - featured five entertainment stages, hundreds of vendors, and a parade, hosted by the Asociación de Comerciantes Profesionales de Oakland.

Thousands of festivalgoers arrived and departed via Fruitvale BART, according to a BART Police Department bulletin issued this morning:

"Four to five thousand people traveled to the Fruitvale station to attend the festivities. Tactical Team members detailed to the station arrested two for public drunkenness and assisted in the arrest of a third at Coliseum station. ...

"Seven citizens were detained for fare evasion/drinking in public violations, and victims of a gang assault in [the Oakland Police Department]'s jurisdiction were aided when they fled to the station for help. Team members also prevented a fight among juveniles from erupting in the plaza area adjacent to the station." —Anneli Rufus
