Bart Davenport

When: Fri., July 22, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $8
Not once, but twice have I likened Bart Davenport to one of his Seventies forbears, Barry Manilow. I now rescind that comparison. Actually, the Berkeley-based singer-songwriter wasn't complaining, since he apparently consumed a lot of Manilow from his parents' record collection, at age six. But they're two different strains of balladeer. Manilow is very linear; Davenport can veer effortlessly from indie pop (in the band Honeycut), to bubbly enchantment ("A Young One," "This Could Be the Night"), to hopefulness and frustration ("Clara"), to world-weary romance ("Maria Bethania"). Over the past decade he's built a vast catalog of song-titles that bear the names of women - real or fictitious - who've been lucky enough to catch his fancy. Indeed, many folks would kill to be on the receiving end of a Davenport serenade. Also, he can juggle. At The Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) on Friday, July 22. 9:30 p.m., $8.
