Barbara Babcock

When: Fri., Aug. 26, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Perhaps Clara Shortridge Foltz inherited her gumption from ancestor Daniel Boone. When her farmer husband ditched her and their five kids, Foltz began studying law in the office of a local judge, and when she was denied admission to HastingsCollege because of her gender, she represented herself in court and won, eventually becoming the West Coast's first lady lawyer. Author Barbara Babcock -- herself the first woman appointed to the regular faculty at Stanford Law -- reads from her new book on Foltz, Woman Lawyer, at Mrs. Dalloway's (2904 College Ave., Berkeley) on Friday, Aug. 26. 7:30 p.m., free. 510-704-8222 or MrsDalloways.com
