Years before commercial stations began blasting the hits of Tone Loc and Young MC, hip-hop was mainly the domain of college radio. Many current hot stars were discovered by audio nerds who lurked in university basements and lugged their collections around in milk crates. KZSU radio show "The Drum," which proclaims itself the longest-running hip-hop show in the world, still broadcasts every Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. featuring flashback mixes, freestyles, and interviews with underground acts. Hosted by DJ KevvyKev, it skews a little to the left of whatever's playing on mainstream stations. Kev brings his annual Bang the Drum hip-hop festival to Golden Gate Park's Peacock Meadow on Sunday, August 31, with a line-up that includes Canibus, Das EFX, Peanut Butter Wolf, Dan the Automator, East Flatbush Project, Pam the Funkstress, the Foreign Legion, Motion Man, DJ D-Sharp, the Oakland Faders, and newbies the Bayliens. 1 p.m., free.
