Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena

When: Wed., March 12, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $22-$44
If you think of flamenco as little more than frilly red skirts and cheerful music, Eva Yerbabuena will introduce you to the dance in its deepest, most soulful expression. Flamenco is among the most personal of dance forms, and “La Yerbabuena” is a flamenca from the tips of her expressive fingers to the rhythmic stomping of her feet. The award-winning choreographer and dancer presents her show Lluvia (Spanish for “rain”) at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way below Telegraph Ave., Berkeley) next week, as part of Cal Performances’ Focus on Flamenco series, and it’s sure to upend a few preconceptions. Passionate and melancholy, somber and intensely emotional, Lluvia takes five dancers on a journey to the heart of darkness, with guitarist (and Yerbabuena’s husband) Paco Jarana leading them with alegrías, milonga, tanguillos, and a closing soleá that gives the spectacular Yerbabuena the final word.
