Re: “More Bands Are Chasing Fewer Bucks

I'm totally in agreement with all said by Piero. As a Bay Area performer fronting four great African bands since 1986, it has become very difficult these days to even get at least a paying gig once a month. Attendance at Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community Center, a non-profit venue of the people, continues to present eclectic, live music 6 nights a week, presenting local African, reggae, blues, Latin, Zydeco, ska, Balkan folk dance bands, conscious hip-hop, and so on. But Ashkenaz is fighting hard to keep the doors open. The community doesn't seem to realize what we're losing, and we'll soon see the last of these beautiful events if they don't support them. We've got to do something before my fellow artists and I have to abandon our art just to try to pay the rent. Another example of a serious setback to local music, due in part also to community neglect, is that KPFA has recently cut back its daily 2-hour eclectic music programs by half, slashing the air time for the valiant volunteer DJs who support and promote local artists. Please join the work at Ashkenaz, and let KPFA know that you want to hear the life-sustaining music of the people. Beyond that, I'd like to hear from others about what we need to do.
Love to all and Happy New Year,
Baba Ken Okulolo
Leader: Kotoja, West African Highlife Band, Afrobeat Connexion and The Nigerian Brothers.

Re: “Express Launches a New Beer and Live Music Venue

Congratulations EBX. This is just the right venue/right time for such a wonderful entertainment place for local artists like myself, have been looking/waiting for. Just can't wait to showcase one of my African bands there in 2010 if Marie Ortega will be interested. Thanks everyone at EBX for your continued support for the ART.
