The first major commercial building to use this approach was the LEED Platinum Naturall Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Robert Redford Building in Santa Monica, which uses a hybrid system of recycled, highly-treated graywater and captured rainwater cistern water for toilet flushing. The building is a multi-story downtown structure with about 40 office spaces, and the recycling system was designed by Bill Wilson and Kevin Poffenbarger. The system has been operating since 2000. As you can imagine, the permitting process was very involved and creative.
