B. B. King

When: Sat., March 2, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $45.50-$85.50

The thrill of performing is not gone for B.B. King, who is spending his twilight years on the road, with his guitar Lucille at his side, selling out clubs and festivals. The 87-year-old "King of Blues" performs seated, but diabetes and bad knees have only slowed him down so much: His fingers nimbly pick at his Gibson, drawing from it powerful notes in his typically restrained style; his soulful voice is rich with gospel tones; and he energetically tells stories in his thick Mississippi accent. King is as commanding a storyteller as he is a musician, and he relishes in fondly recalling the many women who shaped his life and work, and in making his audience laugh. Fortunately, his all-star backing band keeps the music on track, and recent sets have included blues standards such as "Rock Me, Baby," "I Need You So Bad," and, of course, "The Thrill Is Gone." He'll stop by The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday, Feb. 28, and it may be your last chance to see him live. Bay Area-based BhiBhiman opens the show with folk songs inspired by his Sri Lankan heritage. 8 p.m., $45.50, $85.50.
