Re: “Bio Hackers

Hi Devang. Thanks for your response! I was very careful to distinguish synth bio vs. DIY bio in the piece, but the fact of the matter was that the Glowing Plant project raised interesting questions in both. Namely, will similar synth bio projects using plants be regulated in the future? And why is it that the DIY bio community, where the project originated, was so torn on how the project played out?

I understand your concern as well regarding mainstream synth bio projects of more "relevance", but the other interesting thing about the GP project was that it got a lot of attention from people who typically don't follow scientific advancements too closely. For better or worse, it was able to tap into the imaginations of a pretty broad range of people on a popular crowdfunding site, which to me characterized it as more mainstream than other projects of more repute in recent news.

And while I agree that a bigger article should have looked at views from the community besides Mr.Drory's, his view was particularly relevant in this case as he was a founder of the project and an active advocate of synth bio. It's telling that he said the things he did, both for how the project played out and for how some vocal proponents of the field imagine its future. I wanted to touch on that, but certainly agree with you that it's not necessarily a representative viewpoint in the field.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Re: “From Grape to Glass

Thanks for your corrections! The article has been fixed online and we'll print a correction in next week's paper. I did not include Camino because we were focusing on The Punchdown's "natural only" emphasis.
