Axis Dance Company's 21st Anniversary

When: Fri., Oct. 30, 12 p.m. 2009
Price: free

Just as everybody can enjoy watching dance, every body can enjoy dancing. And bodies of all types, with and without disabilities, move together in AXIS Dance Company's innovative productions. Along with worldwide acclaim, seven Isadora Duncan Awards, and an enviable list of collaborators from Bill T. Jones to Meredith Monk to Fred Frith, the company has inspired disabled children, adults, and seniors to take the stage through its Dance Access outreach programs. AXIS' 21st season of physically integrated contemporary dance launches in November, and you can check them out at a lunchtime show on Friday, Oct. 30, at Oakland City Center (Broadway at 14th St.). Dancers in wheelchairs and on foot will perform AXIS' interpretation of Remy Charlip's "Air Mail Dances," a whimsical work based on dance steps the famed choreographer sketched -- and, according to legend, air-mailed to a client -- in 1929. They'll premiere new dances at their home season, the weekend of November 6, 7, and 8 at MalongaCasquelourdArtsCenter (1428 Alice St., Oakland). Noon, free.
