Comedy drama
Bawlin’, rasslin’, and confessin’ till the cows come home for Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Julianne Nicholson, and the rest of the large cast of playwright/screenwriter Tracy Letts’ Oklahoma family talkfest, centered on a drunken, pill-popping, verbally abusive matriarch (Streep) raking her relatives over the coals while serving dinner. They’re eating fried food and drinking iced tea, natch, à la Steel Magnolias, Fried Green Tomatoes, and any other “Southern granny movie” we’ve ever seen – but Letts (Killer Joe, Bug), adapting his hit stage play, never lets us relax. The nastiness just keeps on comin’. Streep, Roberts, Nicholson, and Chris Cooper all have a field day, with Margo Martindale, Sam Shepard, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Ewan McGregor, Misty Upham, Dermot Mulroney, and Benedict Cumberbatch in close pursuit. Directed by TV veteran John Wells (121 min.).
