At the pinnacle of its career in 1996, Sweden's At the Gates abruptly disbanded, but not before leaving behind one of the strongest examples of so-called "melodic death metal." Slaughter of the Soul helped set a standard for how melody could be incorporated into hard, grinding music: on "Cold," a thrash-like riff segues seamlessly into acoustic arpeggios, then delves back in wailing and electrified; sinister riffs and singer Tomas Lindberg's tormented howl opening "Under a Serpent Sun" give it one of the catchiest hooks on the record -- ditto opener "Blinded by Fear." Band members have sagely noted they could likely never top Slaughter, but, wanting closure, chose instead a reunion tour, which stops through theFillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Friday, July 25. For fans, this is a no-brainer. For fans of "hipster metal" who've wanted to branch out, At the Gates is a worthy place to start. 8 p.m., $27.50.
