Re: “Libraries on the Brink

Hmm. I am a librarian. Let's take a look at these arguments.

Police and fire account for over two thirds of the General Fund. They are paid some of the highest rates around - more than $120,000 - and take overtime for work that they didn't do. They have all sorts of internal affairs problems for racketeering and general thuggishness, are not accountable to the public for personnel issues thanks to the Police Officer's Bill of Rights (which Jerry Brown was instrumental in getting passed) which destroyed the Police Review Board (which, by the way, doesn't have subpoena power) and murder black and brown youth with impunity.

Librarians make $50,000 a year. They run literacy programs, storytimes for kids, computer classes for seniors and teach people to read, on a shoestring budget. I don't know how much of the General Fund they take up, but let me tell you, it is miniscule. The main library has been in the same building since the 1940s or so. The storage areas in that building are stuffed to capacity.

Do you remember that baby deer that got gunned down last year? Are you seriously suggesting that we close down libraries so we can have more of that? You're certainly entitled to your opinion "Oaktowncitizen", but really, nobody with an ounce of common sense ought to agree with you.
