Ashkenaz 35th Birthday Party

When: Sat., March 15, 7:30 p.m. 2008
Price: free

The late David Nadel had a vision of bringing world peace through dancing, starting with Balkan music and then adding in the rest of the globe's styles. On March 15, 1973, he opened his all-ages dance hall, Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley). Following Nadel's death in 1996, dancers, staff, and musicians formed a non-profit to keep Nadel's spirit and the club alive. On Saturday, March 15, Ashkenaz celebrates its 35th birthday -- and paying off its mortgage -- with a free festival. World dance music will be provided by Afro-Caribbean band LaKay led by Haitian-born Mystic Man, and Abu Simbel & the Venutians, featuring members of favorite Ashkenaz bands past and present including Kotoja, Zulu Spear, Sidewinders, and Red Hot Chachkas. 7:30 p.m., free, Ashkenaz.com or 510-525-5054.
