It is interesting and instructive that the pro-tenant commenter compares rent control to regulating PG&E while also claiming there is a terrible rental housing shortage. Utilities are a MONOPOLY, that's why they are regulated.
Rental housing is far from a monopoly, but certainly essential.
The commenter never puts together the fact that the shortage of rental housing is a direct relationship to the fact that rental housing IS regulated in Oakland. This is true everywhere rental homes are regulated -from NYC to Oakland, Ca.
Market rents seem to be curse words among some; but you pay market rates for milk and gas, for beer and clothing - why not rents.
If the poor need subsidies, they should have them. It is my guess there are others who don't need them, but they sure are nice for the lucky few who have them.
