Arhoolie Awards Show

When: Fri., Nov. 22, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $38-$125
Chris Strachwitz founded Arhoolie Records in 1960, hoping to record undeservedly obscure talents like Snooks Eaglin and Flaco Jiménez. Fifty-nine years later, the label has a global reputation for its preservation of roots music, a term that didn’t exist when Strachwitz started the label. Last year the label initiated an Awards Show to shine a spotlight on the artists and institutions that keep noncommercial music alive. This year’s winners are Linda Tillery; young Zydeco ace Fredric Watson; and Ashkenaz, ground zero for roots music in Berkeley. The celebration includes music from Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio, Linda Tillery & The Cultural Heritage Choir, and The Sons of the Soul Revivers. This is a first-come first-served event, so arrive early if you want a good seat.
