Patrick Dooley, the founding artistic director at Shotgun Players, has long had a special relationship with the work of British playwright Tom Stoppard. Dooley spent three years bringing Stoppard’s epic The Coast of Utopia trilogy to the Berkeley stage, yet the first Stoppard play he saw was Arcadia — it’s the play that drew Dooley to the power of live theater. Now, Dooley is bringing the 1993 masterpiece to Shotgun as director. The play flutters between events on a country estate in 1809 and the 1990s — and similarly jumps between Classicism and Romanticism and comedy and tragedy. The time-traveling play might look like a simple love story on the surface, but it’s a far more nuanced exploration of human nature. It also dives into the nature of truth in history, mathematics, physics, and other complexities in life.
