At first it may seem a fair question: What business do white, American musicians have appropriating African music for commercial gain? But that's a backwards way of thinking. The ears, not the eyes, should be the judge. In the case of Aphrodesia and Extra Golden, top-rate musicians challenge old attitudes toward "world music" by questioning who exactly can create it. San Francisco's predominantly white Aphrodesia makes FelaKuti'sAfrobeat its own with female vocals and interwoven elements from outside Africa. Extra Golden features two indie rockers from Washington, DC, and two Benga players from Kenya who, across two albums, have developed an expressive, powerful new style. When both acts gather at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco) on Sunday, June 22, tired preconceptions should be checked at the door and abandoned on the way out. Afrobeat specialist DJ Jeremiah opens. 7 p.m., $15. RickshawStop.com
