Workmanlike natural splendor galore in this heavily visual chronicle of the men and women who live and work at the bottom of the world, where the sun sets at the end of April and doesn’t come out until months later, and 123 mph winds blow snow through door cracks and fill bunkhouses with snow. The cinematography by director Anthony Powell is first-rate, especially when gazing into the glorious night sky full of stars. Powell also has long talks with the scientists, researchers, and support personnel who choose to live “down there,” to find out what draws them to such an inhospitable place. It’s not the penguins (91 min.).
