Another East Bay Parish Shuts Down

Yesterday the Chron published a gentle farewell to San Leandro's St. Alphonsus Liguori parish, which Catholic church leaders have decided to close and move its parishoners into the new cathedral being built on Lake Merritt. The church has been eliminating small parishes all over the East Bay, consolidating them into the vast new parish, but losing something of the intimacy of the old neighborhood churches. In St. Alphonsus's case, however, it looks like nothing could have saved it in any case. The parish couldn't afford the maintenance on the church, and the congregation was getting steadily older. Still, it is rather sad and wistful to see the end of this community.
