The visual effects are positively transcendent in the last 15 minutes of this sci-fi adventure - but the first hour-and-a-half may prove tedious, as a businesslike Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh (relatively restrained), and their team of female scientists galumph through the tropical rainforest, searching for the source of a terrifying extra-natural phenomenon called The Shimmer. Director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) continues his exploration of the Earth's awful future slowly, with numerous flashbacks robbing the movie of its creature-feature suspense. Suggestion: Come into it for the last half hour and skip the rest. Screenplay by Garland, adapted from a novel by Jeff VanderMeer. Oscar Isaac costars as the Portman character's luckless husband (115 min., 2018, rated R)
