The sun will come out tomorrow? It’s already shining on this drastic remake of the super-annuated comic-strip-stage-musical-movie property featuring an unwanted New York City eleven-year-old girl (cute Quvenzhané Wallis), her mean foster mother (Cameron Diaz, in full slut mode), a billionaire would-be politician who thinks he hates kids (Jamie Foxx, playing it straight), and a supporting cast of media-crazy Manhattan chatterboxes doing the let’s-elect-a-mayor dance. Wallis’ appeal is no joke – she has the Shirley Temple gleam in her eyes. Rom-com director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) wrote the bright and shiny screenplay with Aline Brosh McKenna, adapted from Thomas Meehan’s stage play book and Harold Gray’s comic strip. Costarring Rose Byrne (love interest) and Bobby Cannavale (Foxx’s overly ambitious assistant) (119 min.).
