Re: “Nice Dreams

Oh Christ, I love this movie so, so much. But it doesn't start to jounce until James Franco shows up. From the time he pops that strawberry into his mouth, off a fondue fork no less, to the time he slides into his bubbe's car, you cannot rip your eyes off of him. and if you do, you will miss something. In these days, when comic performances consist mostly of snarky one liners and camera mugging, he gives us a fully rounded performance that's practically Chaplinesque in scope. And in doing so, creates a character you just take to your heart.
Slapped, spat on, beaten with a Dustbuster, kicked, run over ,shot at, stabbed with a fork, punched, blown up, the poor little thing suffers more physical abuse than Rambo and more emotional abuse than Mildred Pierce, what with Red selling him out and Dale breaking his heart. Yet, like the Little Tramp, he is never diminished and never loses sight of who he is. And at the movie's end, the scene in the diner, there he is, shining, like, well, silver.
And when the awards season rolls arouund, if Franco doesn't get nominated for at least a Golden Globe, if not a goddamned Oscar, there's no justice.
