Oakland has its share of high-quality Indian eateries, but few that fall into the “everyday curry house” category. That’s the niche that Annapurna ably fills: a go-to spot for diners who get a hankering for such standards as chicken tikka masala and palak paneer, or for the restaurant’s exceptionally good naan. The Nepalese-owned restaurant also offers a number of Himalayan specialties, chief among which are lentil soup and the momos — of which the lamb version is the one to get. But our favorite dish is the house specialty: a velvety Nepalese-style goat curry that, when ordered “Indian spicy,” is a sweet, exquisite pleasure to eat, even as it sets your mouth aflame.
