Anita Amirrezvani

When: Thu., March 21, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: free

California College of the Arts professor Anita Amirrezvani was born in pre-Islamic Revolution Iran but largely grew up worlds away, in San Francisco. A far cry from the fundamentalist yet largely "democratic" Iranian government of today, the country pre-1979 was ruled by centuries of monarchical dynasties. And while Amirrezvani points out that several legendary women -- from Anne Boleyn to Queen Elizabeth I to Mary, Queen of Scots -- "changed the course of history in the royal courts of sixteenth-century England," mythologized women from the Islamic world are few and far between. In Equal of the Sun, which is based loosely on the life of Princess Pari Khan Khanoom, Amirrezvani brings one such powerful woman to light. Join Amirrezvani on Thursday, Mar. 21, at Mrs. Dalloway's (2904 College Ave., Berkeley) as she reads from her novel. 7:30 pm, free.
