Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes

Twenty-six years ago, playwright Tony Kushner was commissioned by San Francisco’s Eureka Theatre to create an ambitious, sprawling work about the AIDS crisis and homosexuality in the 1980s. Delivered in two sections, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes interweaves story lines that involve mythological angels, Mormons, a gay couple, prostitutes, medical professionals, and so much more. Now, the two-part, Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play gets a new reveal at Berkeley Rep, where audiences can experience both performances in one day or each three-and-a-half-hour part on separate occasions. Intriguing “extras” include a discussion about the impact of Angels on LGBTQ literature; a discussion and book reading with artistic director Tony Taccone (who originally commissioned the play), guest speakers, and actor Stephen Spinella (who plays Roy Cohn in this production); and a panel of activists about the AIDS crisis and ongoing research.
