Andy Warhol's Quick Pix and Pop Icons

When: June 2-20 2010

Return with us now to the thrilling days of yesteryear, before the art world embraced the mass market, before today's counterfeiters of Warhol Brillo boxes had been born. The quick pix in this show (curated by Wesley Gibson) are the 152 photos that the Warhol Foundation donated to Hearst (one of 183 institutional recipients) through its Photographic Legacy Program; the pop icons are the evergreen Dolly, Gianni, Vitus, RonJr., Yves, and Pia. Screenprints borrowed from local collections portray other celebs -- Jackie, Judy, James, Marilyn, and Mick -- as well as Chanel, VW, Mobil, Blackglama, Paramount, and Life Savers icons. Historic works by other Pop artists (Berman, Dine, Dowd, Heineckin, Jones, Lichtenstein, Ramos, Souza, Wesley, Wesselman), a 1956 letter from MOMA declining the donation of a drawing, and Warhol's Polaroid cameras, now looking prehistoric, are also featured. Warhol runs through June 20 at Hearst Art Gallery (St. Mary's College, 1928 St. Mary's Rd., Moraga). 925-631-4379 or
