Andy Allo at The New Parish

Andy Allo got her dream gig in 2011 as a member of Prince’s New Power Generation Band. It was only three years earlier that she played her first open mic (at a Sacramento dive bar). The following year, she wrote a brilliant neo-soul track called “DreamLand,” which featured underground hip-hop legend Blu. Her 2012 record Superconductor got a boost thanks to her affiliation with Prince. It’s a great, smoothly soulful record, with some genuinely gritty funk moments and sprinklings of jazz. She also emerged as a confident bandleader, with subtle swagger. Her latest EP, One Step Closer, takes a sharp left turn, with strong pop and folk elements. The beats are straight-forward and the songwriting is heart-on-the-sleeve emotional. There are a lot of ballads to dig into for long, reflective drives.
