Andrea Wolper

When: Sat., Sept. 29, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $12. $15

Brooklyn vocalist Andrea Wolper delivers exquisite renditions of Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer's "Skylark" and Richard Rodgers' "Something Good" on her current Parallel Lives CD but, as do a growing number of young jazz singers, extends the so-called Great American Songbook to also include more contemporary material. In her case, "contemporary" means tunes by Joni Mitchell and Buffy Sainte-Marie, along with several well-crafted originals. Her alto pipes are warm and richly rounded, and she applies them, alternately, with respect for tradition and a sense of adventure. Wolper's combo includes Ken Filiano, a frequent collaborator whose simultaneously melodic and aggressive bass solos, played pizzicato as well as arco, bring Charles Mingus to mind. Guitarist Dave MacNab and drummer Vijay Anderson round out the group, which appears at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Jazzschool (2087 Addison St., Berkeley), $15. Jazzschool.com
