An Evening with Barry Gifford, Sailor & Lula: A Pegasus Books/Cerrito Speakeasy Theater Event

When: Thu., May 14, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $8

After the Parkway went belly up, Catherine and Kyle moved their whole operation to its surviving sister theater in El Cerrito, which now has a jam-packed calendar and a high concentration of cool events. On Thursday, May 14, the CerritoSpeakeasy (10070 San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito) will screenDavid Lynch's 1990 film Wild at Heart, about two lovers on the run. An arty spin on the old Bonnie and Clyde story, the film stars Laura Dern as Lula, Nicholas Cage as her ex-con lover Sailor, and Diane Ladd as Lula's psychopathic mother, who is out to kill Sailor. This special screening will also feature a live appearance by author Barry Gifford, who wrote the seven-book series that inspired the film. Gifford recently ended the saga with The Imagination of the Heart, an epistolary novel in which eighty-year-old Lula recounts her long, twisted love affair with Sailor (who died fifteen years prior), and her last road trip. 9 p.m., $7.
