An Acoustic Performance by Justin Currie: Justin Currie

When: Sun., June 13, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $22

Del Amitri may have never gotten the kind of love that Scottish brethren like Belle & Sebastian, Momus, and Orange Juice received from the critical intelligentsia, but it was the kind of winsome alt-pop like "Kiss This Thing Goodbye" and "Tell Her This" that got me hooked on the band during its Nineties heyday. Much credit also goes to Justin Currie (a cousin to the aforementioned Momus), the band's frontman whose soulful croon and vulnerable lyrics gave his band such a distinctive sound. Currie finally got around to popping out a solo debut in 2007. Going down the lovelorn route, What Is Love For featured eleven ballads steeped in lush arrangements and melancholy sentiments. Last month saw Currie drop his sophomore follow-up, The Great War. Thankfully, he's upped the jangly guitar quotient considerably while maintaining his penchant for looking at love and relationships through a half-empty glass. Jaymes Reunion kicks off an evening that's being billed as an acoustic performance by Currie at Cafe du Nord (2170 Market St., San Francisco) on Sunday, June 13. 8 p.m., $
