Documentary
The short, stressful life and career of British pop singer Amy Winehouse get an appropriately jittery, thoroughly electrifying treatment in Asif Kapadia’s biodoc. The film’s footage is mostly taken from mobile phones and broadcast news and thus is grainy and dissipated, but we’re nevertheless able to clearly see what made Winehouse tick, and what ultimately drove her to drink herself to death at age 27 – she was terrified of fame and its noisy glare. The performance scenes are first-class. Director Kapadia’s intimate portrait will likely create many new fans for Winehouse’s soulful hybrid of jazz and R&B vocal styles (128 min.).
