“Every great drink starts with a plant,” declares Amy Stewart in the introduction to The Drunken Botanist, and she then spends the rest of the book unpacking that thesis with equal parts scientific authority (Stewart really is a botanist) and booze-nerd gleefulness (that’s where the “drunken” comes in), starting with the history and uses of all the botanical bases you already know about — grapes, corn, agave — and working her way up to wormwood, angostura, hops, and all manner of herbal tinctures and DIY infusions. It’s kind of like what might happen if Michael Pollan were a serious cocktail obsessive, and it’s an absolutely worthy read. Catch Stewart this Thursday when she discusses the book at the Piedmont Center for the Arts (801 Magnolia Ave., Piedmont).
