The Race Across America doesn't quite make the Tour de France look like a pleasure cruise, but at 800 miles longer and ten levels of hell more brutal, the lesser-known event is a far cry from its multi-stage counterpart. RAAM participants spend nine days racing sleeplessly from one coast to the other; racers have died and gone nuts. Ironman athlete Amy Snyder wrote Hell on Two Wheels about the 2009 race, the closest in RAAM's three-decade history, and she reads from it on Wednesday, July 13, at Pegasus Downtown (2349 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 7:30 p.m., free. 510-649-1320 or Pegasus.Indiebound.com
