Amitav Ghosh at KPFA Radio 94.1 FM Presents One Day Only Staff Pick

When: Tue., Sept. 17, 7:30-9:30 p.m. 2019
Price: $12 adv, $15 door.
What is literary fiction doing to help readers envision and deal with the effects of a global climate crisis? According to acclaimed Indian author Amitav Ghosh, probably not much and certainly not enough. Author of the Ibis Trilogy, Ghosh dealt directly with climate change in his 2016 collection of essays, The Great Derangement, chiding fellow fiction writers for not addressing climate and biodiversity as major themes in their work. Now he has published a new novel, Gun Island, which mixes science, history, and myth to depict one bookseller’s encounters with the supernatural and the most significant risks of global heating — extreme weather, rising sea levels, displaced migrants. Ghosh will be in conversation with Vijaya Nagarajan, an Associate Professor at the University of San Francisco.
