A simple, straightforward, true story of racial injustice in a small Texas town, circa 2000, makes for an involving drama by director Tim Disney (great-nephew of the mouse man). When an African-American single mom (newcomer Nicole Beharie) is wrongly prosecuted for drug dealing, she scorns the customary plea bargain and decides to fight back in court — which means taking on the county’s kingpin DA (Michael O’Keefe), who can potentially ruin her life even further. No tricks, no CGI, no supernatural happenings, just a strong plot well told. Written by producer Bill Haney, with fine supporting playing by Will Patton, Tim Blake Nelson, and Alfre Woodard (103 min.).
