American Professionals

When: Sat., July 5, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $7

These days, most young women are more likely to worship sterile teenyboppers like Miley Cyrus than even know what a riot-grrl is. But Mia Zapata represented that emboldened, independent, feminist spirit as the singer of Seattle band the Gits, until her life was cut short by her rape and murder in 1993. The documentary The Gits follows the band's rise in the early grunge scene and explores what made Zapata -- whose brimming energy inspired contemporaries Joan Jett and 7 Year Bitch -- such a magnetic force. The documentary, which gets its theatrical and DVD release this week, also chronicles the hunt for Zapata's mysterious killer. Catch a screening on Saturday, July 5, at the Uptown (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), followed by SF band theAmerican Professionals (featuring two ex-Gits members) and Portland's Nitebrite. 9 p.m., $7.
