Less than two weeks in, it looks like 2011 has been a good year for the East Bay's very own jazz phenomenon, Ambrose Akinmusire. The Oakland native and Berkeley High alum, whom we referred to as nothing less than the " best emerging jazz trumpeter in the world" in a profile last year, was recently named a "2011 face to watch" by the LA Times, and on Tuesday, Blue Note records announced Akinsumure's debut on the venerable jazz label, which will also serve as his major-label debut as bandleader rather than backing or side musician. The album's set to be released on April 5.

And in bonus local-boys-make-good music news, Berkeley-bred self-proclaimed "nerdcore" rapper MC Frontalot has an extensive interview on Gothamist today.

History-laden thrillers, intellectual capers, a romantic heroine with a Ph.D, a murder mystery penned by a MacArthur Genius: This summer’s best books — many of which have local authors and settings — are equal parts brainy and beachy.
