Re: “How CalSTRS Investments Influenced Workers to Vote for Donald Trump

While the actions of CalSTRS are interesting, the leap from that to voting for Trump is tenuous.

This article implies that after the actions of CalSTRS, Relational and Timken resulted in the splitting of the family owned Timken into separate companies that somehow a "disaster" resulted. But TimkenSteel is still in Canton, still producing, and still part of the community. They had a couple of layoffs, in part because the downturn in oil drilling (yeah!) resulted in less demand, but I'd love to see some proof of the other effects. The NYT article is great, and two years old. Perhaps some fact checking on recent events is in order.

In fact Timken and some of its employees, like Trump, place blame on regulation and imports for their sluggish performance. I'd expect that antipathy towards trade agreements and regulation played a large role; CalSTRS role seems minimal.

Re: “The Vanishing Underground: Oakland's Housing Crisis Is Also Displacing its Arts and Music Counterculture

NB: warehouses.

The bigger issue is where did the businesses go that built the warehouses? yeah, good on artists for moving in and taking advantage of that economic dislocation, but they sure don't employ as many people, and it always leads to the next wave of settlers. We didn't seem to see much bemoaning the loss of the carpet company or other occupants. Different class.

Anyone have a model for supporting arts that doesn't involve this same old cycle?

Re: “Mama’s Royal Cafe Is for Sale

Yeah, great place. But also in the early seventies we got Rockridge Cafe (still going) and the Brick Hut, now gone. Not just Mama's. And wasn't there that little place up Fruitvale? with the small counter and huge omelets?

Re: “Actually, Brock Turner Did Deserve Prison for the Stanford Sexual Assault

I agree that Brock Turner appears to be a remorseless pervert. Jane Doe's letter convincingly describes how this wasn't a he said/she said date rape, but a savage attack by someone who happened to be drunk.

And if Turner's arguments were believeable, he wouldn't have convicted beyond a reasonable doubt. He IS a sex criminal, and perhaps a dangerous one, since he fails to recognize his own propensity to act as a predator when drunk (although coherent enough to run away from the scene of the crime and dissemble about it).

But that being said, the equity argument goes both ways. Wouldn't we prefer to see the non privileged get less time, rather than the privileged get more? Is there some range the author would prefer?

Re: “Letters for the Week of June 1, 2016

@steve tabor
I rather think it was Mr Tabor who is having a hard time leaving junior high behind; bad experience with the football team?

And perhaps no coincidence he refers to the predominately African American athletes in the article as "boys" who need to "grow up."

Sports and entertainment are a diversion. It's Mr Tabor who is taking that too seriously, and setting up false conflict between say enjoying the Dubs and political action. All while casting shade on the thousands of Oaklanders who like a good basketball game. At their local junior high or at the Coliseum.
