Re: “BAD Girls Battle It Out

I disagree that this sport is feminist. I like roller derby, by the way. But I don't think it's feminist at all.
To say the B.A.D Girls events have "a burlesque element thrown in" is a bit like saying there is a little skating thrown in too.
I have seen these events and they are fun, they totally rule, but the burlesque business seems to me be more than half of the reason the event is even happening.
I had an argument with a friend after I wrote a story about the Derby Girls. I said the there was a distracting amount of T&A -- not neccessarily terrible but distracting nonetheless. He suggested I would be killed if I ever got into the sport. I don't doubt him, but his point doesn't dispute that there were boobs and butts whizzing around at all times.
Call me a prude but I don't think this is "feminist" at all. I just think its silly showmanship, not unlike the showmanship of the old roller derby that looked much more like entertainment wrestling than anything else. While I am impressed with broken teeth and damaged knees, I don't think injuring yourself while showing off your tits and ass is feminist. Really, what's the difference between the BAD Girls and the lingere bowl? Not much.
